Eldredge History

Eldredge Lumber History - Scott Eldredge with Dad and Brother

From its humble ‘true New Englander’ beginnings, the Eldredge family of companies has grown into a leading supplier of building and home supplies. Founded in 1937 when Wolfrett “Wolf” Eldredge, grandfather to current owner Scott Eldredge, began marketing lumber salvaged from the demolition of the massive Passaconaway Inn, a 19th century Cape Neddick summer resort hotel.

Using his sawmill and planning mill, Wolf eventually expanded the business into custom millwork, manufacturing items such as windows and doors from York Beach Maine. Later, the business was taken over by Wolf’s sons, Burke E. Eldredge and Wolfrett “Sport” Eldredge, Jr., who was Scott’s father. In 1957, a fire destroyed the facility at York Beach and Sport moved the business to Route One in Cape Neddick Maine. This is where the lumberyard and hardware store was added to the sawmill and the Company became Eldredge Lumber & Hardware.

Scott Eldredge with Employees at GrillFestIn the early 1980’s, Sport’s son Scott, who had been actively involved in the business since he was 12 years old, became the Manager of the business. Sport ran the sawmill until the late 1990’s. Scott moved the business to its current location on Route One in York Maine shortly after Sport passed away in 1997. The company has expanded to include the Ace Hardware store, a full service lumber yard, a tool and equipment rental and repair division and a rolloff container service. In addition, we operate the Atlantic Design Center, a leading edge kitchen, bath and flooring design showcase, at this location. We also operate Eldredge Kittery Ace in Kittery Maine and the Marvin Design Gallery by Eldredge in Portland Maine. The Marvin Design Galley is a beautiful state of the art, window and door design showcase from which we sell and install Marvin and Integrity window and door products. For those that share the avocation of fly fishing, Eldredge owns and operates Eldredge Bros. Fly Shop in Cape Neddick, Maine. This is a fantastic place for fly fishing anglers to get all the gear, supplies and renowned expertise they need before they head out on the water. For those that need a little “extra” storage space, Eldredge owns ACE storage with two locations in York, Maine. In 2011 we opened Eldredge Lumber & Hardware in Portland, Maine to better serve our customers to the North!

Not to mention friendly service from an experienced staff that has been there for many, many years.

When you walk into our showroom and store, one of our dedicated team of employees—some of whom have been with us for over twenty years—will greet you. You’ll find Scott wondering around chatting it up with old and new customers alike… you may even see one of his sons hard at work or his grandson Bronson cruising down one of the the aisles!
